The Importance of Pastoral Care in Schools

All schools have pastoral care systems in place to ensure that children in their care are supported emotionally and physically. Pastoral care is typically delivered by form tutors and school mentors that are committed to ensuring the wellbeing of their students by helping them to deal with stress. Throughout the pandemic, while schools have had their limitations, this has been more important than ever.

We have teamed up with an independent Nursery in Birmingham to explore the importance of pastoral care in schools.

Learning How to Deal with Adversity

Challenges are a part of life and adversity is inevitable. The welfare system that pastoral care provides teaches children the fundamentals for taking care of themselves emotionally. Children are able to practice talking to a trusted person about their issues, get to the root of their problems and create logical plans for challenging them. This might be friendship issues or exam stress. This process can help children to develop healthy habits for the future by learning how to deal with them correctly.

Improved School Attendance and Engagement

For children dealing with mental health issues or other issues such as bullying, going to school can become challenging and inhibit their education. Teachers often see a drop in participation from these students which can be improved by working with pastoral care staff.

Improved Academic Success

Support provided by pastoral care can improve a child’s confidence, relieve anxiety and allow them to perform better in school by providing the mechanisms needed to do so. This can help children to take full advantage of opportunities at school and allow for more effective study.

Improved Teacher Relationships

Having tutors that are invested in them, children are able to develop an improved relationship with their school and education. This can help them to enjoy learning and improve school attendance.
